Historical NoteSenate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen, a Republican from Illinois, supported the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and helped end the Southern filibuster on the bill. He also supported President Johnson's escalation of the Vietnam War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
