Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ imagines a scowling man (identifiable as Abe Fortas) ("$$, Fortas, Fed. Gun control, etc., etc.") holding up his hand. LBJ angrily writes, "Farewell 90th Congress, you obstinate group~". Then, he happily visualizes Fortas saying “Yes sir!” and holding a rolled up paper ("Great Society"). LBJ writes, "Why couldn't you have been like MY 89th troop? Lyndon P.S. Here’s a reminder to pack: don’t go too far, I might call you back!". A small piece of paper “Copley Newspapers” adhered to lower right. Artist signature lower right: "Bob Stevens”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower center: [blue] “(No caption)”. Handwritten at lower right: [blue] “Fri Oct 18”.
Historical NoteThe 90th Congress served from January 3, 1967 to January 3, 1969. The Democrats had a supermajority in the Senate and a majority in the House. Because there were more Republicans in the 90th Congress than the 89th Congress, Johnson would have to negotiate across party lines to get enough votes. Some major legislation passed during this Congress was the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which included the Fair Housing Act, and the Gun Control Act of 1968.
