Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ walks on White House grounds between Dirksen and Eisenhower, who holds a sign ("We Support Present Policy in Vietnam -Ike"). The sign blocks an elephant’s ("House GOP") aim at LBJ. A small piece of paper “The Hartford Times” adhered to lower right. Caption: “He's Too Smart for Me”. Artist signature lower right: "Ed Valtman ‘65”.
Historical NoteAs president, Lyndon B. Johnson looked to Dwight Eisenhower for advice on the Vietnam War, demonstrating the value Johnson placed on bi-partisanship. Everett Dirksen was a Republican senator from Illinois who was the Senate Minority Leader during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency. At first, he favored American involvement in Vietnam, but modified his position in 1967.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
