Physical DescriptionOriginal three-frame cartoon drawing. Frame 1: Blast of "NO"s from a man (identifiable as Ho Chi Minh) (“Hanoi”) hit LBJ in the face. He is holding an olive branch and its leaves fly away in the strength of the “NO”s. Another man (“Moscow”) also sits at the table. Frame 2: Bombs ("Resumed Bombing of Hanoi") fall on Ho. Frame 3: "Moscow" says, "Hanoi was just gatting ready to talk peace!" of beat-up Ho. A small piece of paper “McNaught Syndicate, Inc.” adhered to lower center. Caption: “Everytime U. S. Extends an Olive Branch”. Artist signature lower center: "Reg Manning”.

Historical NoteNorth Vietnam did not want to recognize the government of South Vietnam and had the goal of reunification, while South Vietnam did not recognize the National Liberation Front. Meanwhile, the United States followed Containment policy, hoping to keep Communism from diffusing to other Southeast Asian nations, and aimed to leave Vietnam without the humiliation of defeat.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
