Historical NoteCharles de Gaulle believed that NATO advantaged the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom over France and he wanted France to have its own nuclear power and pursue detente with the Soviet Union. He also criticized the Vietnam War. President Johnson announced plans for a travel tax which would tax Americans traveling outside the Western hemisphere. However, this was shelved in March 1968 by the House Ways and Means Committee. "Yankee go home" is a phrase opposing American presence in another country.
