Physical Description​​Print reproduction of cartoon drawing. LBJ is dressed as the captain of ship ("USS Consensus"). He speaks to a saluting sailor (identifiable as Everett Dirksen). A plume of smoke ("Fulbright Speech") rises up from the side of the ship. Caption reads: “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead, Mr. Dirksen.” Artist signature lower right: "©1965 Mauldin Chicago Sun-Times".

Historical NoteJ. William Fulbright was a Democratic senator from Arkansas. He was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and supported detente policies. He became one of the loudest critics of the Johnson administration’s Vietnam policy and he criticized American foreign policy actions in the Dominican Republic and the western hemisphere as a whole whenever there is a revolution.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
