Historical NoteMany Republicans opposed the Vietnam War. In 1967 Anti-war Republicans released the White Paper on Vietnam that pointed to the high loss of life, unpopularity, and expenses caused by the Vietnam War. Like other critics of the Vietnam War, Republicans criticized the credibility gap, the lack of disclosure to the media about the Vietnam War, and extended its meaning to skepticism about other policies. However, other Republicans supported the Vietnam War. In this cartoon, each Republican depicted was a leader in the party. Everett Dirksen was the Senate Minority Leader, Ronald Reagan was the governor of California and a conservative Republican candidate in 1968, Nelson Rockefeller was the governor of New York and a liberal Republican candidate in 1968, Barry Goldwater was th 1964 Republican candidate for president, and Richard Nixon was Eisenhower's vice president and the 1968 Republican candidate.
